This year, Marilyn Gardiner will be teaching jewellery making classes at Beadfx in Toronto. The chain mail classes are suitable for jewellery artists at all levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and use Marilyn’s unique jewellery kit designs. The beading classes focus on making jewellery with beads while learning the necessary skills and building your confidence to create professional work.

Be Prepared: Make Some Hostess Gifts
(All Levels)
Yes, you could just take along a bottle of wine, but here’s a chance to up your game. I have many easy kits for small projects like earrings, purse jewellery/zipper pulls, and pendants that could be used as a hostess gift during the holiday season. Best of all, you don’t need to venture into crowed malls to shop!
You can register for a three-hour morning or afternoon session OR you can register for a full-day option which will save you a bit of money.
I will bring 32 different projects, some in more than one metal—and all are suitable for beginning chainmaillers. Kits will range from $11.99 to $65.99, with the majority being less than $20.
Pre-requisite: Some experience with opening and closing jump rings.
Bring:
• Eyeglasses or magnifiers for close-up work.
• Pliers designed for chain mail will be provided for class use, but you may wish to bring your personal tools.
• Lunch or snack if you are choosing to stay for the full day. Coffee and cold drinks will be available.
Kit Contents:
All kits include step-by-step, illustrated instructions, jump rings, and everything needed to complete the project. All rings are saw-cut and polished.
Class Fee: $70 (full day) or $40 (half day) plus HST

The Flat Maille Conspiracy, Prt 1 (All Levels)
Join Marilyn Gardiner for a full-day exploration of 4 chains that lie flat. You’ll learn how to make them and see a variety of ways they can be used in jewellery making. (No, this class isn’t about the flat earth conspiracy!)
Pre-requisite: None
Class Description:

Part 1
We will discuss questions you may have about:
Tools
• Buying pliers: how to choose, what to consider when you are choosing pliers to buy
• An opportunity to try out lots of different kinds in class
Wire & jump rings:
• What you need to know before you buy wire & jump rings
• Different metal options, their qualities, their cost, and how to clean them
• How to open and close jump rings
Lighting & Magnification
• Try out different types of magnification and learn about lighting options
Part 2
You will start by making a silver filled Parallel (Helm) Earring with a briolette crystal. Quality workmanship will be demonstrated and encouraged.
Next, you’ll learn and make 3 sample flat weaves.

Japanese Stepping Stones (Japanese 12 in 2)
As we make these we will examine jewellery samples and photos to see the variety of ways these weaves can be used to make bracelets, pendants, necklaces and earrings.
We’ll also see examples of how these basics lead to variations such as Celtic Dawn, King’s Scale, Scaled Vipera Berus, and Shenandoah.
Part 3
To finish the day, you will choose from a selection of related project kits and start making your choice of a bracelet, earrings or necklace to work on.
Bring:
• Eyeglasses or magnifiers for close-up work. Tools designed for chainmail will be provided for class use but you may bring your personal tools.
• Please bring a computer tablet or laptop if you have one.
• As this is a full-day class, please bring a lunch; coffee and cold drinks will be available.

All kits include step-by-step, illustrated instructions, jump rings, and everything needed to complete the project. All rings are saw-cut and polished.
Class Fee: $70 plus HST
Kit Fee:
$20 (includes HST) for the Earring kit, sample rings in multiple sizes, and handouts.
